Jeanette lives in Miami and struggles with addiction. The daughter of a Cuban immigrant, she is determined to learn more about her family history; a story that her mother, Carmen, does not want to tell her. That is why she makes the sudden decision to take in the daughter of her neighbor detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service. Carmen, for her part, is still struggling with the trauma of leaving Cuba behind, as she processes her complicated relationship with her own mother and tries to raise a wayward Jeanette. Jeanette, desperate for answers, travels to Cuba to find her grandmother and discover the secrets of the past.
